BBC Radio Suffolk Not Travelling to Burton But Brenner Back
Thursday, 14th Jan 2021 16:32

BBC Radio Suffolk won’t be travelling to away games due to the current lockdown because of safety regulations put in place for their staff, however, regular commentator Brenner Woolley will be back on the air having missed the Swindon match.

Woolley missed Town’s 3-2 defeat to the Robins as he had tested positive with Covid-19 and was replaced by former Anglia TV stalwart and current Sky Sports reporter Stuart Jarrold. However, he is now on the mend and will be back on the airwaves on Saturday.

But BBC staff are currently not permitted to travel to different regions of the country for safety reasons meaning Woolley will be providing commentary from iFollow’s streamed coverage from BBC Suffolk in Ipswich rather than making the trip to Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium. The same will be the case for all future away games for the time being.

Former Town academy player and current Felixstowe & Walton player Stuart Ainsley will be providing punditry on the game against the Brewers.

Saturday’s game was the first first commentary Woolley had missed in 18 years, his first having been the 2-0 away defeat at Bradford in February 2003 with the BBC not having held commentary rights for one season during that period.

Town’s iFollow service also usually uses BBC Radio Suffolk’s commentary and as a result of the broadcaster not travelling fans will instead have the option of listening to the home team’s commentary or stadium noise due to impossibility of synching the stand-in radio commentary with the club’s video streaming service.

Good to hear that sensible decisions are being made about what is essential and what is not. No problem listening to a commentary overlay from Brenner in a safe environment. Stuart Jarrold's commentary last Saturday was a classic but for all the wrong reasons ! Snow may yet call the game off.

Poor old Stuart, it was great when a goal was scored, but crushingly disappointing 2 minutes later to realise it was by the opposition.
Mick Mills did his best to keep him right!

Good news that Brenner is on the mend.

I am aware that he has some detractors, but in my opinion he is a first lass commentator and excellent contributor to BBC radio Suffolk sports news and programmes.

I also thinks he brings excellent background knowledge and context to his manager and player interviews. I know that not all supporters will agree with me, but that is my honest view as a supporter of 50 years standing.

In conclusion, we are fortunate to have him on our local BBC radio.

Be great to hear Brenner back - I think his commentary is excellent. Hope he continues to get well soon.

Hearing Stuart Jarrold doing the commentary last weekend has given me a greater appreciation for the accuracy of Brenner's delivery. However, Brenner likes to tempt fate by saying things like "Ipswich must be expecting to take 7 points from the next 3 games" and then seems to revel in our misery when we inevitably fail to do so.

If Brenner is going to be commentating using the iFollow broadcast, that sounds like he won't actually be on the iFollow stream, right? I hate listening to other teams' commentary. They too often end up talking absolute garbage nothing to do with the game.

Damn, this is my local ground, pity I won't be able to go.
It's been snowing most of today Bert but it's too warm to lay.

Brenner is excellent, tells you how it is. Far better than the midland commentators who make their teams sound like world-beaters even when they're 5:0 down.

How anyone even gave Stuart Jarrold the role is beyond reason. An appalling presenter twenty years ago, let alone now.

Let's get Bianca Westwood to Bubble with the team and provide her unique analysis.

Agree with most of the above posts! Hadn't heard Brenner, or input from Mick Mills, (see my blog!) until the beginning of this season. They must be up there with the very best of local/regional radio across the UK. Bert and jabberjackson (above) are spot on. Yes. SJ's commentary was classic - not only the missed goal, but identifying the players by the colour of their boots...only to realise, eventually, that some players were wearing boots of the same colour. Mick Millls was kind and understanding...and a great help to this confused listener.
